Quick answer
The best place to sell clothes online depends on what you sell: Depop, Poshmark or eBay for secondhand clothes, Etsy for clothes you make and for vintage that is 20+ years old, and Shopify or Big Cartel for your own brand. On a $30 sale, Depop takes $1.44 in fees, Etsy $3.30, eBay $4.48 and Poshmark $6. Shopify and Big Cartel take $1.17 plus any monthly plan, but on an own store you bring the buyers yourself.

How we compared
The best place to sell clothes online is Depop, Poshmark or eBay for secondhand clothes, Etsy for clothes you make and for vintage, and Shopify or Big Cartel for your own brand. To get there, all six were checked against the same five criteria on each platform's own pages, for a US seller. The list is not ranked: the first two criteria decide which platforms fit you, and the fees decide between those.
- What clothes it accepts Secondhand, vintage, handmade or your own brand. Marketplaces set their own rules on what may be listed, so check this first.
- Who brings the buyers Marketplaces show your listings to their own shoppers. With an own store, you bring the buyers: social posts, ads, word of mouth.
- Fees on each sale Percentage and fixed fees on one order, read from each platform's own fee page for a US seller.
- Fixed monthly cost What you pay in a month with no sales, at the plan a small seller would start on.
- Shipping and limits Who pays for the label, and caps or extra fees that change the real cost.
Best websites to sell clothes at a glance
Each platform is shown at the plan a small clothing seller would start on. The source and check date for every number are listed under each platform and at the end of the page.
What each platform keeps from a $30 sale
Fees are easier to compare on one order than as percentages. Example: one $30 jacket sold to a US buyer, paid by card. On Depop that sale pays zero selling fees and 3.3% + $0.45 for payment processing.
- Shopify $1.17 plus $39 a month Card 2.9% + 30¢ $1.17
- Big Cartel $1.17 free for 5 products, or $15 a month Big Cartel 0% $0, Stripe 2.9% + $0.30 $1.17
- Depop baseline $1.44 no monthly plan Processing 3.3% + $0.45 $1.44
- Etsy $3.30 no monthly plan Listing $0.20, Transaction 6.5% $1.95, Processing 3% + $0.25 $1.15
- eBay $4.48 no monthly plan Final value 13.6% $4.08, Per order $0.40
- Poshmark $6 no monthly plan Commission 20% $6
Assumes a $30 item, a US seller and buyer, shipping paid by the buyer, no boosted or promoted listing and no sales tax, with fees worked out on the item price alone. Some fees also apply to shipping: Depop charges processing on the item sale price plus shipping costs and any applicable taxes, eBay charges on the order total, including shipping and sales tax, and Etsy's transaction fee is charged on the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping. Poshmark takes 20% because the sale is at or above $15. eBay uses its most-categories rate and assumes the listing is within its 250 free listings a month. Depop's boosting fee of 12% and Etsy's Offsite Ads fee of 15% apply only to orders that come from a boost or an ad, so they are left out.
Shopify Basic and Big Cartel Platinum both charge less per sale than Depop, but the gap on each sale is small, so a monthly plan takes many sales to pay back. Big Cartel's free Gold plan needs no break-even: for up to 5 products it costs less than Depop from the first sale. eBay's Starter Store and Etsy Plus cost money each month but charge more per sale than Depop, so they never break even.
The count assumes every sale would have happened anyway. Depop brings shoppers and an own store does not, so the real question is whether you can bring that many buyers yourself.
Each place to sell clothes in detail
Every platform gets the same five lines: price, fees per sale, what it is strong at, who it is best for and its main limit.
The baseline. Depop is a resale marketplace where US sellers pay zero selling fees, so only payment processing comes out of each sale unless the listing was boosted.
- Price
- No subscription plan to buy, and zero selling fees for US sellers.
- Fees per sale
- Payment processing of 3.3% + $0.45 on each order.
- Strong at
- Pre-loved fashion, which Depop lists first among what sells best: vintage, streetwear, designer pieces, and everyday basics. With a Depop Shipping label, shipping is prepaid by the buyer.
- Best for
- Resellers of secondhand clothes who want the lowest fee per sale among the marketplaces here.
- Limit
- Processing is charged on the item sale price plus shipping costs and any applicable taxes, and boosted listings cost 12% of each sale that came from a boost.
A resale marketplace where the buyer pays for shipping and Poshmark takes a commission from each sale.
- Price
- Poshmark lists no monthly costs, and listing an item is free.
- Fees per sale
- A commission of 20% on sales of $15 or more, and a flat $2.95 on sales below that.
- Strong at
- Shipping: the buyer pays a flat $6.49 for a prepaid label that covers up to five pounds (5 lbs).
- Best for
- Sellers who want shipping handled with one flat label and accept a higher commission for it.
- Limit
- It takes the most per sale here: $6 on a $30 sale, against $1.44 on Depop. Heavy bundles cost you extra, with shipping over 5 lbs paid by seller.
A general marketplace with its own buyers. Without a paid eBay Store you get 250 free listings a month.
- Price
- No monthly fee without an eBay Store. A Starter Store is $7.95 a month on monthly renewal.
- Fees per sale
- A final value fee of 13.6% in most categories and $0.40 per order over $10 ($0.30 at $10 or less). Some clothing categories differ: 8% on athletic shoes sold for $150 or more, with no per order fee, and 15% on women's bags and handbags up to $2,000. There is no separate processing fee.
- Strong at
- Listing in volume without a plan, and sneakers: the rate drops to 8% on athletic shoes sold for $150 or more, with no per order fee.
- Best for
- Resellers who list in volume and want marketplace buyers without a plan fee.
- Limit
- Fees are charged on the order total, including shipping and sales tax, so the shipping a buyer pays raises the fee too.
A marketplace where everything must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by a seller. Clothes count as vintage when they are 20+ years old.
- Price
- There is no subscription fee on Etsy Standard. Etsy Plus is an optional plan at $10 a month.
- Fees per sale
- A 6.5% transaction fee on the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping, and processing of 3% + $0.25 per order. The listing fee is $0.20 per listing, and a listing expires after 4 months.
- Strong at
- Clothes you make or design yourself, and vintage clothing.
- Best for
- People who make or design clothes, and vintage sellers.
- Limit
- Etsy's rules leave out resold commercially available items that are newer than 20 years old, so recent secondhand clothes belong on Depop, Poshmark or eBay. Offsite Ads take 15% of orders that come from Etsy's ads, up to $100 per order; shops under $10,000 in sales over the past 365 days can opt out, while larger shops pay 12%, mandatory for the lifetime of the shop.
An own-store builder. You get a full online store for your clothing brand and bring the buyers yourself.
- Price
- Basic plan $39 a month, or $29 a month billed yearly.
- Fees per sale
- Card processing of 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, and no transaction fee with Shopify Payments. On Basic, another payment provider adds 2%.
- Strong at
- Sell unlimited products on every plan, while Big Cartel caps products by plan.
- Best for
- Clothing brands with an audience that sell enough each month to cover the plan.
- Limit
- The plan fee is due in months with no sales, and buyers come only from your own marketing.
A store builder with no listing fees and a 0% transaction fee.
- Price
- A free Gold plan for 5 products. Platinum is $15 a month for up to 50 products.
- Fees per sale
- Big Cartel takes 0%. You pay the payment processor, for example 2.9% + $0.30 (Stripe).
- Strong at
- Low fixed cost for a small clothing line.
- Best for
- Small clothing brands with a few designs and their own audience.
- Limit
- Products are capped by plan: 5 products on the free plan and up to 50 products on Platinum, and buyers only come from you.

Questions about where to sell clothes online
What is the best place to sell clothes online?
The best place to sell clothes online depends on what you sell. Secondhand clothes fit Depop, Poshmark and eBay, which bring their own shoppers; on a $30 sale Depop takes the least in fees at $1.44. Clothes you make or design, and vintage that is 20+ years old, fit Etsy. Your own clothing brand fits an own store on Shopify or Big Cartel, where you bring the buyers.
What is the best website to sell clothes with low fees?
The best website to sell clothes with low fees is an own store if you bring buyers, and Depop if you need shoppers. On a $30 sale, Shopify and Big Cartel come to $1.17 before any plan, Depop to $1.44, Etsy to $3.30, eBay to $4.48 and Poshmark to $6.
What is the best platform to sell clothes for a clothing brand?
The best platform to sell clothes for your own brand is usually an own store, where the shop carries your brand. Big Cartel has a free Gold plan for 5 products, and Shopify Basic costs $39 a month with unlimited products. Card processing is 2.9% + 30¢ on Shopify and 2.9% + $0.30 (Stripe) on Big Cartel, and on either one the buyers come from your own marketing.
Is Depop or Poshmark better for selling clothes?
Depop costs less per sale than Poshmark for selling clothes. On a $30 sale, Depop takes $1.44 in processing, while Poshmark takes $6 through its 20% commission. On Poshmark the buyer pays one flat $6.49 label, and on Depop shipping is prepaid by the buyer when you use a Depop Shipping label.
Do you need a monthly plan to sell clothes online?
You do not need a monthly plan to sell clothes online. Depop, Poshmark, eBay and Etsy have no required plan, and Big Cartel has a free Gold plan for 5 products. Shopify Basic costs $39 a month, which pays off against Depop at about 145 sales of $30 a month.
Can you sell secondhand clothes on Etsy?
Resold secondhand clothes can be listed on Etsy only if they count as vintage, which Etsy defines as 20+ years old. Etsy's Creativity Standards leave out resold commercially available items that are newer than 20 years old, and they list resold clothing that is ready-to-use as-is among items that do not count as sourced by a seller. Recent secondhand clothes fit Depop, Poshmark or eBay instead.
Is Nation a place to sell clothes online?
Nation is not a place to sell clothes online that you can compare today. It is an AI store builder, pre-launch, with a waitlist on withnation.ai, and its pricing is not announced yet. Because no shopper marketplace has been announced, it would sit with the own-store builders rather than the marketplaces. Nation will be added to this comparison once signup is public and pricing is published.
