Sites like Depop: where else to sell secondhand clothes

By Nation 11 min read

Quick answer

The closest sites like Depop are Poshmark and eBay, which also bring their own shoppers for secondhand clothes but keep more of a $30 sale: $6 and $4.48 against Depop's $1.44. Etsy suits vintage that is 20+ years old and clothing you make yourself, and keeps $3.30. Big Cartel is an own store with a free plan for 5 products and card fees of $1.17, but you bring every buyer.

Nation, an AI store builder, publishes this page. It is pre-launch, with a waitlist on withnation.ai, so it is not in the list or the fee example. See where Nation fits.

How we compared

Every platform here was checked against the same four questions. The first one decides more than the fees do.

  1. Who brings the buyers Marketplaces show your listings to their own shoppers. With an own store, every buyer comes from you: social posts, ads, word of mouth.
  2. Fees on each sale Commission, selling and processing fees on one order, read from each platform's own fee page for a US seller.
  3. Fixed monthly cost What you pay in a month with no sales, at the plan a small reseller would start on.
  4. Rules and limits What each platform lets you sell, product caps and fees you cannot switch off, which change the real cost.

Each platform is shown at the plan a small reseller would start on. The source and check date for every number are listed under each platform and at the end of the page.

What each platform keeps from a $30 sale

Fees are easier to compare on one order than as percentages. Example: one $30 secondhand jacket sold to a US buyer, paid by card. On Depop that sale pays zero selling fees and 3.3% + $0.45 for payment processing.

Fees on one $30 sale, US seller Fees the seller pays on the sale, plus Etsy's listing fee for the one listing sold. Monthly plans are noted next to each amount.
  1. Big Cartel $1.17 free for 5 products, or $15 a month Big Cartel 0% $0, Stripe 2.9% + $0.30 $1.17
  2. Depop baseline $1.44 no monthly plan Processing 3.3% + $0.45 $1.44
  3. Etsy $3.30 no monthly plan Listing $0.20, Transaction 6.5% $1.95, Processing 3% + $0.25 $1.15
  4. eBay $4.48 no monthly plan Final value 13.6% $4.08, Per order $0.40
  5. Poshmark $6 no monthly plan Commission 20% $6

Assumes a $30 item, a US seller and buyer, shipping paid by the buyer, no boosted or promoted listing and no sales tax. Fees are worked out on the item price only. On a real order most of these fees also apply to shipping, so they come to a little more than shown. Depop charges processing on the item sale price plus shipping costs and any applicable taxes. eBay charges on the order total, including shipping and sales tax. Etsy charges its transaction fee on the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping. Poshmark takes 20% because the sale is at or above $15. eBay uses its most-categories rate and assumes the listing is within its 250 free listings a month. Depop's boosting fee of 12% and Etsy's Offsite Ads fee of 15% apply only to orders from boosted listings or Etsy's ads, and are left out.

Only Big Cartel has a paid plan with lower fees per sale than Depop. Its free Gold plan needs no break-even: for up to 5 products it costs less than Depop from the first sale. The table shows how many $30 sales a month the Platinum plan at $15 a month needs before it costs less than Depop. An eBay Starter Store ($7.95 a month) and Etsy Plus ($10 a month) also cost money each month, but their fees per sale stay higher than Depop's, so they never break even.

Sales of $30 a month Big Cartel Platinum needs to cost less than Depop
Own storeMonthly planSaved per saleSales a month
Big Cartel$15 Platinum plan, billed monthly$0.2756

The count assumes every sale would have happened anyway. Depop brings shoppers and an own store does not, so the real question is whether you can bring that many buyers yourself.

Depop and each alternative in detail

Every platform gets the same five lines: price, fees per sale, what it is strong at, who it is best for and its main limit.

Depop

Marketplace depop.com

The baseline. US sellers pay zero selling fees, and listings show to Depop's own shoppers, which is what every other option here is measured against.

Price
No monthly fee and no subscription plans. US sellers pay zero selling fees.
Fees per sale
Payment processing of 3.3% + $0.45, charged on the item sale price plus shipping costs and any applicable taxes. Buyers pay their own marketplace fee of up to 5% of the item purchase price plus a small fixed amount, which does not come out of your payout.
Strong at
Pre-loved fashion, the first thing Depop lists under what sells best, with vintage, streetwear, designer pieces, and everyday basics as its examples.
Best for
People clearing out their closet and resellers of clothes, shoes and accessories.
Limit
Boosted listings cost 12% of each sale that came from a boost, on top of processing.

Poshmark

Marketplace poshmark.com

Poshmark calls itself a fashion resale marketplace. It brings its own shoppers, takes one commission on every sale and has a flat shipping price paid by the buyer.

Price
Poshmark lists no monthly costs, and listings are free.
Fees per sale
A commission of 20% on sales of $15 or more, and a flat $2.95 on sales below that.
Strong at
Simple shipping: buyers pay $6.49 for a bundle up to five pounds (5 lbs).
Best for
Resellers of brand clothing who want one shipping price and no postage to work out.
Limit
It takes the most per sale here: $6 on a $30 sale against $1.44 on Depop.

eBay

Marketplace ebay.com

A general marketplace with its own buyers in fashion and many other categories. Without a paid eBay Store you get 250 free listings a month.

Price
No monthly fee without an eBay Store. A Starter Store is $7.95 a month with monthly renewal.
Fees per sale
A final value fee of 13.6% in most categories, including most clothing, and $0.40 per order over $10 ($0.30 at $10 or less). There is no separate processing fee.
Strong at
Items buyers search for by brand, model or size, and goods beyond clothing.
Best for
Resellers who sell more than clothes and want one marketplace for all of it.
Limit
The fee is charged on the order total, including shipping and sales tax, so it also applies to the shipping you charge.

Etsy

Marketplace etsy.com

A marketplace where every item must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by a seller. For a Depop seller that covers vintage, which Etsy defines as items 20+ years old, and clothing you make or alter by hand.

Price
There is no subscription fee on Etsy Standard. Etsy Plus is optional at $10 a month.
Fees per sale
A 6.5% transaction fee on the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping, and 3% + $0.25 processing on the total amount of the sale, including tax and shipping. The listing fee is $0.20 per listing, and a listing expires after 4 months.
Strong at
Buyers who search for vintage and handmade pieces.
Best for
Sellers of vintage pieces and people who make or upcycle their own clothes.
Limit
Resold commercially available items that are newer than 20 years old do not qualify, so recent secondhand clothes belong on Depop, Poshmark or eBay. Offsite Ads take 15% of orders that come from Etsy's ads, up to $100 per order; shops under $10,000 in sales over the past 365 days can opt out.

Big Cartel

Own store bigcartel.com

An online store builder with no listing fees and a 0% transaction fee. Big Cartel invites sellers to join a community of artists & small businesses.

Price
A free Gold plan for 5 products. Platinum is $15 a month for up to 50 products.
Fees per sale
Big Cartel takes 0%. You pay the payment processor, for example 2.9% + $0.30 (Stripe).
Strong at
Low fixed cost for a small clothing line with its own name.
Best for
Small clothing brands and designers who already have a following.
Limit
It brings no shoppers of its own, so every buyer comes from your posts, ads and links. Products are capped by plan: 5 products free and up to 50 products on Platinum.

Which one fits you

You are clearing out your own closet and want the lowest fees with buyers included.

Depop

US sellers pay zero selling fees and 3.3% + $0.45 processing: $1.44 on a $30 sale, the lowest of the marketplaces here.

You resell brand clothing and want one shipping price the buyer pays.

Poshmark

Buyers pay $6.49 for a bundle up to five pounds (5 lbs). You pay for that simplicity in fees: $6 on a $30 sale.

You also resell things that are not clothes.

eBay

eBay is not limited to fashion. It gives 250 free listings a month and keeps $4.48 on a $30 sale in most categories.

You sell vintage that is 20+ years old, or make and rework your own clothes.

Etsy

Etsy only allows items made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by a seller, which covers vintage and your own work, and it keeps $3.30 on a $30 sale, less than Poshmark or eBay. Recent secondhand pieces do not qualify.

You run a small clothing brand with your own following.

Big Cartel

A free Gold plan for 5 products and 0% taken by Big Cartel, so card fees of $1.17 are the whole cost of a $30 sale.

You want more buyers to see the same stock.

Depop plus one marketplace

List each piece on Depop and on Poshmark or eBay, and end the other listing as soon as it sells, because a secondhand piece can only sell once.

Questions about sites like Depop

What are the best sites like Depop?

The best sites like Depop depend on what you sell. For secondhand clothes, Poshmark and eBay are closest because they bring their own shoppers, but on a $30 sale they keep $6 and $4.48 against $1.44 on Depop. Etsy suits vintage and handmade clothing, and Big Cartel suits small brands with their own audience.

Which Depop alternative has the lowest fees?

Among Depop alternatives, Big Cartel has the lowest fees on a sale: $1.17 in card fees on a $30 sale, with a free plan for 5 products. Of the marketplaces, Etsy keeps $3.30, eBay $4.48 and Poshmark $6, all more than Depop's $1.44. Big Cartel brings no shoppers, so every buyer has to come from you.

Is Poshmark cheaper than Depop?

Poshmark is not cheaper than Depop for a US seller. Poshmark takes 20% on sales of $15 or more and $2.95 below that, so a $30 sale costs $6. Depop charges zero selling fees and 3.3% + $0.45 processing, which comes to $1.44 on the same sale.

Does Depop charge selling fees in the US?

Depop charges US sellers zero selling fees. US sellers still pay processing of 3.3% + $0.45 on the item sale price plus shipping costs and any applicable taxes, and 12% on sales from boosted listings. Buyers pay their own marketplace fee of up to 5% of the item purchase price plus a small fixed amount, which is not taken from the seller's payout.

Can I sell secondhand clothes on Etsy instead of Depop?

Secondhand clothes can go on Etsy only as vintage, which Etsy defines as items 20+ years old that the seller curated or collected, or as hand altered items, meaning commercially available base items that a seller altered using specialized handcrafting skills. Resold commercially available items that are newer than 20 years old do not qualify, so most recent secondhand pieces stay on Depop, Poshmark or eBay.

Can I sell on Depop and other sites at the same time?

You can sell on Depop and other sites at the same time, for example Depop and Poshmark or eBay with the same stock. Each marketplace shows the piece to a different group of shoppers. The risk is selling one item twice, so end the other listings as soon as a piece sells.

Is Nation a Depop alternative?

Nation is not a Depop alternative you can compare today. It is an AI store builder, pre-launch, with a waitlist on withnation.ai, and its pricing is not announced yet. Because no shopper marketplace has been announced, it would sit with own-store builders such as Big Cartel rather than the marketplaces. Nation will be added to this comparison once signup is public and pricing is published.
