Quick answer
Amazon FBA fees are a per-unit fulfillment fee set by size tier and shipping weight, a monthly storage fee of $0.78 per cubic foot for standard-size stock from January to September, and an inbound placement fee when you send stock in. On top of FBA you pay Amazon's referral fee, 15% in Home & Kitchen, and the $39.99/month Professional plan. On a $30 small handmade item in Home & Kitchen, the referral and fulfillment fees come to $7.92.

How much does Amazon FBA cost?
Amazon FBA costs a fulfillment fee on every unit Amazon ships, a monthly storage fee for the space your stock takes up, and an inbound placement fee when you send inventory to Amazon. Stock that sits too long adds an aged inventory surcharge. These FBA fees sit on top of the selling fees every Amazon seller pays: the referral fee on each sale and the selling plan.
In return, Amazon picks, packs and ships orders, and handles customer service and returns. The table lists each fee as Amazon publishes it for US sellers, using the rates for a small standard-size item priced between $10 and $50.
Amazon fulfillment fees by size and weight
Amazon sets the fulfillment fee as a per-unit rate based on product type, size tier and shipping weight, and its rate card has separate columns by item price. A small standard item measures at most 15 x 12 x 0.75 inches. A large standard item measures at most 18 x 14 x 8 inches. Flat items that fit the small standard limits, such as a folded tea towel, prints or earrings on a card, pay the lowest rates. Thicker items, such as candles, mugs and boxed soaps, fall into large standard.
The rates below apply to items priced from $10 to $50 that are not apparel, until the holiday peak starts. Items priced over $50 pay more: the smallest small standard item pays $3.58 per unit instead of $3.32 per unit. Items under $10 pay less.
Three adjustments change these numbers. Amazon adds a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to every fulfillment fee. From October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, holiday peak rates apply: the over 2 oz to 4 oz small standard rate rises from $3.42 per unit to $3.61 per unit. Items priced under $10 get Low-Price FBA rates, $0.86 less than standard FBA rates on average.
How to work out FBA fees on one $30 sale
Example: a $30 hand-printed tea towel in Home & Kitchen, folded to small standard size and under 4 oz, sold on the Professional plan and shipped by FBA outside the holiday peak.
Add the referral fee
Home & Kitchen pays a referral fee of 15%, with a minimum of $0.30 per item. Amazon charges it on the total price, which includes its list price, as well as shipping costs and any gift-wrapping charges. When the buyer pays no shipping, that is the item price.
Add the fulfillment fee
A small standard unit over 2 oz and up to 4 oz, priced between $10 and $50, pays $3.42 per unit. Add the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on that fee.
Total the two
Referral and fulfillment fees come to $7.92 on this $30 sale, before the surcharge, storage, inbound placement and the monthly plan.
Add your share of storage and inbound
Storage is $0.78 per cubic foot a month for the whole stock, so a slow-selling item carries more of it per sale. Inbound placement is $0.14 to $0.32 per unit for each unit you send to a single location.
FBA fees compared with shipping orders yourself
The same $30 item sold with FBA, on Amazon Handmade with you shipping, and on Etsy with you shipping. The FBA amount includes Amazon picking, packing and delivering the order. The other two leave postage, packaging and your time to you, so compare them against what one order costs you to ship.
- Etsy, you ship $3.30 no monthly plan Listing $0.20, Transaction 6.5% $1.95, Processing 3% + $0.25 $1.15
- Amazon Handmade, you ship $4.50 plan $39.99 a month, then waived once approved Referral 15% $4.50
- Amazon FBA baseline $7.92 plus $39.99/month Referral 15% $4.50, FBA fulfillment $3.42
Assumes a $30 item, small standard size, over 2 oz and up to 4 oz, sold outside the holiday peak, no storage, no inbound placement fee, no ads and a standard US card. The FBA amount leaves out the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge.
Amazon FBA storage fees
Amazon charges monthly storage on your daily average volume in cubic feet. Standard-size items pay $0.78 per cubic foot a month from January to September and $2.40 per cubic foot from October to December. Example: if your stock takes up 2 cubic feet on an average day in July, you pay 2 times $0.78 per cubic foot for that month.
Larger sellers can also pay a storage utilization surcharge. It applies only when every condition is met: a Professional account, a first shipment more than 365 days ago, an average daily volume for the size tier at or above 25 cubic feet, and a storage utilization ratio above 22 weeks. A seller who stores less than that volume pays only the base fee.
Stock that stays in Amazon's warehouses for 181 days or longer also pays an aged inventory surcharge, starting at $0.50 per cubic foot and rising to $5.45 per cubic foot from 271 days, with higher rates after a year. The lowest rates do not apply to clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry, and watches, which pay the higher rates instead. New Professional sellers get free storage and customer returns with auto-enrollment in the FBA New Selection program for eligible new products.
Inbound placement: the fee for sending stock in
When you create a shipment to Amazon, you choose how it is split. Sending everything to a single location costs $0.14 to $0.32 per unit per small standard unit of 8 oz or less, or $0.20 to $0.40 per unit for a large standard unit of 12 oz or less. The exact rate depends on the item's size, weight and the warehouse you ship to.
Splitting the shipment across the locations Amazon picks costs no fee, but it needs at least five identical cartons or pallets per item. A small batch may not meet that rule, and then the single-location fee applies. Amazon charges it 45 days after your shipment is received. New sellers who send their first shipment within Amazon's time limit after listing can get $400 in credits toward this fee. You also pay the carrier to get the boxes to Amazon.
How to use the Amazon FBA calculator
Amazon's free Revenue Calculator, sometimes called the FBA fee calculator, compares estimates for FBA and your own fulfillment method. It is the quickest way to check the fees on one product before you send stock.
Open the Revenue Calculator
Go to the Revenue Calculator, linked from Amazon's FBA page and from its Seller Central fee pages.
Find or define your product
Search the catalog for a similar product, or enter the dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping charges of your own item. Measure it packed, the way it will ship.
Fill in both columns
Under Amazon Fulfillment, add your monthly storage estimate and inbound costs. Under Your fulfillment, add what postage, packaging and your time cost per order.
Compare the net result
The calculator works out fees, costs and revenue for each method. Check it again before the holiday peak, when fulfillment and storage rates rise.
Is Amazon FBA worth it for small handmade products?
FBA tends to fit products that are small, light, priced above $10 and made in batches you can sell within a few months. A flat item over 2 oz and up to 4 oz pays $3.42 per unit before the surcharge. Compare that with what postage, packaging and your time cost on one order.
FBA fits less well for one-of-a-kind, made-to-order or personalised pieces, which cannot sit in a warehouse in advance. Slow sellers also lose out, because storage keeps running and the aged inventory surcharge starts after 181 days or longer. Heavy or bulky pieces move into higher size tiers quickly.
If you sell through Amazon Handmade and ship orders yourself, you pay the 15% or $0.30, whichever is greater referral fee and no FBA fees, and the plan fee is waived after the first month once approved for Handmade.

Is Amazon FBA worth it for a small seller?
Amazon FBA can be worth it for a small seller with light, standard-size products that sell steadily, because Amazon handles shipping, customer service and returns for one per-unit fee. It is a weaker fit for made-to-order or one-of-a-kind items and for slow sellers, which keep paying monthly storage while they wait.
