ChatGPT for small business: plans, prices and the program

By Nation 9 min read

Quick answer

ChatGPT for small business is OpenAI's program, launched on July 21, 2026, plus the plans a small team can buy, mainly ChatGPT Business at $20 per user per month if billed annually or $25 per user per month if billed monthly for a Standard seat. Business needs at least 2 Standard or Premium seats in total, includes ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex, and OpenAI says OpenAI won’t train on your workspace’s data. A solo owner can start on Plus at $20/month instead.

Nation, an AI store builder, publishes this page. It is pre-launch, with a waitlist on withnation.ai, and it is not one of the ChatGPT plans compared here. See where Nation fits.

What ChatGPT for small business means

The phrase covers two things. The first is the ChatGPT for small business program, which OpenAI announced on July 21, 2026. The second is the set of paid plans a small business can use: the personal Plus plan, and ChatGPT Business, the shared workspace plan for teams that was called ChatGPT Team until August 29, 2025.

OpenAI describes ChatGPT Business as a self-serve plan designed for organizations that want a shared ChatGPT workspace for their teams. A Standard seat costs $20 per user per month if billed annually, or $25 per user per month if billed monthly. Each Standard seat includes ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. The program itself is a set of events, resources and feedback channels around these plans, with a focus on ChatGPT Work, OpenAI's new agent.

For a store owner, the plan decision matters more than the program. The plan sets the price, how much you can use ChatGPT Work, and whether OpenAI can train its models on what you type.

ChatGPT plans and prices for a small business

The table lists the plans a small business is most likely to compare, with the prices OpenAI publishes for most countries in US dollars. Prices can differ by country and currency, so check OpenAI's pricing page before you buy.

Business, Standard seat$20 per user per month if billed annually, or $25 per user per month if billed monthlyIncluded: ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and CodexA team that wants one shared workspace; needs at least 2 Standard or Premium seats in total
Business, Premium seat$100 per user per month when billed annually, or $125 per user per month when billed monthlyIncluded, with 5x more usage than Standard seats, no 5-hour usage limitPeople on the team who use ChatGPT Work or Codex all day

A Business workspace can mix Standard and Premium seats. If a team goes past its limits, the owner can buy workspace credits that extend usage beyond the included rate limits. A Business subscription does not include API usage; the API is billed separately. Unused seats are not refundable for the current billing period, so add seats as people join rather than ahead of time.

Paying by invoice and other sales-led options are not part of self-serve Business. OpenAI says teams that need invoice billing, purchase orders, bank transfer, wire, ACH, net terms should use a contracted offering instead of self-serve ChatGPT Business.

The ChatGPT for small business program

The ChatGPT for small business program launched on July 21, 2026. The announcement mentions no price change or discount. As OpenAI's announcement describes it, the program is a way to learn and to give feedback: members can share feedback through webinar Q&As, conversations at local events, and surveys, and a sign-up form sends the latest small business updates, events, and resources.

The program's page on OpenAI's site lists live and on-demand webinars. Two are useful for store owners. One, run with Shopify on Sep 2, 2026, was titled Launch Smarter on Shopify with ChatGPT and Codex and covered turning product information and launch plans into repeatable workflows. Another, with Intuit, is titled Use QuickBooks Data in ChatGPT to Make Better Financial Decisions.

OpenAI's small business page also sets out what it promises a paying business: SAML SSO and multi-factor authentication, that the service is SOC 2 Type 2 certified, and that data is encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2+).

ChatGPT Work for small business owners

ChatGPT Work is the product the program is built around. OpenAI calls it an agent that can complete multi-step tasks. It was announced on July 9, 2026 and runs on GPT‑5.6.

In practice, you connect ChatGPT Work to the tools you already use and give it a task. It can create sheets, slides, docs, and web apps. You can follow its progress and approve important actions before it acts.

  • Connected apps: plugins link it to Slack and Microsoft Teams, Google Drive and SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs, project trackers and other tools.
  • Desktop app: OpenAI lists Chat, Work, and Codex available to users on every plan, including Free.
  • Usage: longer tasks cost more of your allowance; OpenAI says more complex tasks may use more of your plan’s included usage.
  • Plan limits: the Free plan has Limited ChatGPT Work access on desktop, Plus has Expanded access to ChatGPT Work on desktop, web, and mobile, and Business seats include it.

Example: a two-person candle shop could ask ChatGPT Work to turn a supplier price list in Google Drive into a product sheet, then draft product descriptions for review. Someone still checks the output before it goes on the store.

Data controls: what happens to what you type

The biggest difference between personal plans and ChatGPT Business is training. On Business, OpenAI states that OpenAI won’t train on your workspace’s data. On personal plans such as Free, Go and Plus, you decide whether your chats help train OpenAI's models with the setting called Improve the model for everyone in Data Controls. Once you turn it off, the setting applies to your entire account.

If you paste customer names, order details or supplier terms into ChatGPT, the Business plan, or the training switch on a personal plan, is the control that matters.

  • Roles: a Business workspace has Member, Admin, and Owner.
  • Sign-in: Business supports SAML SSO and multi-factor authentication.
  • Private chats: by default, admins and owners cannot see all private member chats.
  • Export: in a Business workspace, Data export is not available, so keep your own copies of important files.
  • Temporary Chats on personal plans are deleted from our systems after 30 days.

ChatGPT small business offers for Shopify and Wix sellers

OpenAI's program announcement, as read on 2 Oct 2026, lists no discount, credit or partner price for Shopify or Wix sellers. What does exist are integrations that put a Shopify or Wix business inside ChatGPT.

Shopify: Shopify's agentic storefronts make products discoverable in ChatGPT. The ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores, and OpenAI's merchant page says: If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated. Shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the U.S., and to be eligible a store must sell to customers in the United States. Shopify states there are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT; buyers finish on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, so your normal card fee still applies, for example 2.9% + 30¢ for online standard cards on the Basic plan with Shopify Payments.

Shopify also requires your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy to be filled in, and legal disclosures should sit in the first 6,000 characters of each product description.

Wix: the Wix app in ChatGPT lets you describe a site and let AI create a Wix Harmony site for you. You Tag @wix in a chat to start it, and it appears like any other site in your Wix account. The Wix free plan is $0, cannot accept payments; a paid plan is needed to take payments, so taking payments on that site needs a paid plan; the cheapest plan that lists accepting payments is $29 a month (billed yearly, paid in full upfront).

How to choose and set up ChatGPT for a small business

These steps follow the plan rules above. They apply whether you sell on Shopify, Wix or elsewhere.

  1. Count who will use it

One person can use Plus at $20/month. Two or more people who share files and chats fit ChatGPT Business, which needs at least 2 Standard or Premium seats in total.

  2. Decide on data

If you will paste customer or supplier data, choose Business, where OpenAI won’t train on your workspace’s data, or turn off Improve the model for everyone on a personal plan.

  3. Pick seat types

Start everyone on Standard seats and move heavy users to Premium, which has 5x more usage than Standard seats, no 5-hour usage limit. Annual billing is cheaper per seat than monthly.

  4. Connect your tools

Add plugins for the apps you use, such as your drive and email. Shopify sellers can check the ChatGPT channel under Sales channels > Agentic in the admin; Wix users connect the Wix app inside ChatGPT.

  5. Join the program updates

Sign up on OpenAI's small business page to get the latest small business updates, events, and resources.
