Google Business Profile verification: methods, proof and fixes

By Nation 10 min read

Quick answer

Google Business Profile verification proves to Google that you own or manage a real business at the address or area on the profile. Google picks the methods you can use, which can include a video recording, a live video call, a phone call or text, an email or a postcard, and a review takes up to 5 business days. Verification often fails when a video misses the location, signage or proof of management, or from business details that change mid-process.

What Google Business Profile verification is

Google Business Profile verification is the check Google runs before it lets you manage a business listing on Search and Maps. Until a profile is verified, you cannot edit business info such as the name or hours, or interact with customers as the owner. Verification ties the profile to your Google Account and gives you ownership of it.

Adding or claiming a profile costs nothing: Google says you can do it at no charge.

Verification is only open to businesses that Google considers eligible. A business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. That rules out some sellers before they start, which the next section covers.

Who can verify a Business Profile

Google's eligibility rules decide whether verification is possible at all. The table shows the cases that matter most for small sellers and makers, as Google's help pages state them.

Business Profile eligibility, as stated in Google Business Profile Help
SituationWhat Google says
Storefront that customers visitEligible: a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours
Service-area business that travels to customersEligible; video verification covers storefront, service-area and hybrid businesses
Online-only shop with no in-person serviceNot eligible: you’re not eligible for a Business Profile
Address is a P.O. boxNot eligible: Google excludes a business listed at a P.O. box or mailbox in a remote location
Virtual office or rented mailing addressNot eligible: that location isn't eligible for a Business Profile
Second profile for the same businessTreated as a duplicate: it won’t show on Google Search or Maps

If you sell only online and never meet customers in person, a Business Profile is not the right tool. Your website, marketplace listings and Google Merchant Center cover that case instead.

If you work from home and visit customers, list the business as a service-area business. Google says that if you do not serve customers at your location, do not add your business address to your Business Profile. For the video, a home-based service-area business can film landmarks and signs in its immediate neighbourhood.

How to verify a Google Business Profile: the methods

You do not choose the method. Verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can’t be changed, and the options shown depend on your business type, public info, region, or business hours. In some cases, you may need to verify your business with more than one method. If your business is eligible for video verification, Google says we recommend that you use this option.

The table lists each method, what you need for it, and the rule that most often trips people up.

Google Business Profile verification methods
MethodWhat you needRule to watch
Video recordingA mobile device signed in to the account that manages the profileAt least 30 seconds, continuous and recorded live; pre-recorded videos aren't allowed
Live video callA device with a camera, at your business, during opening hoursCalls are only available within the business hours of your location
Phone or textAccess to the business phone number on the profileInteractive Voice Response (IVR) systems won’t get the code, so a phone menu blocks it
EmailAccess to the email address shown on the verification screenOnly works if you can open that inbox
PostcardA correct mailing addressMost codes arrive within 14 days; codes expire after 30 days

After you submit, Google reviews the information. Reviews take up to 5 business days, and Google says some take longer. Some profiles are verified instantly, for example when You verify your website with Google Search Console.

How to verify a Google Business Profile with a video

Google recommends video recording when your profile offers it. The video must be An unedited, unique, and complete recording with no breaks. It must be Recorded and uploaded from a mobile device through your Business Profile, so plan the route before you press record.

  1. Plan what you will film

Walk the route once without recording. Decide where you will start, which street sign or landmark you will show, where your sign is, and which employee-only area you will open. The recording cannot be paused or edited.

  2. Show where the business is

Start outside. Film a street sign, the building number, neighbouring shops or a landmark, so Google can match the place to the pin on Maps. Service-area businesses film signs and landmarks near the business address.

  3. Show that the business exists

Film your permanent sign, storefront or showroom. The business name in the video must match the name on your Business Profile. Service-area businesses show branded tools, equipment, a branded vehicle or business cards instead.

  4. Show that you manage it

Open something only staff can access: the cash register, the kitchen or storage room, or the point-of-sale system. Service-area businesses can perform a service, unlock a branded van, or show a business permit, invoice or utility bill that matches the profile name.

  5. Keep private details out

Google says the video must not include Sensitive info like bank account, tax, or ID numbers, private information about you or others, or other people's faces. Cover documents so only the business name shows.

  6. Review and upload

Watch the recording back in the app. If anything is missing, record again before you upload. After the upload, the review takes up to 5 business days.

What Google asks to see as proof

Google's video and live video call instructions ask you to show three things: where the business is, that it exists as a real operation, and that you manage it. Phone, text, email and postcard work differently: you receive a code or message at the phone line, inbox or mailing address on the profile.

For a storefront, that means a permanent sign with the profile name, filmed in one take with the street around it and an employee-only area inside. For a service-area business, it means tools, equipment or a branded vehicle, plus a document in the business name. If a business has no permanent on-site signage, Google says to list it as a service-area business instead of storefront.

If your legal name and your sign differ, check the profile name against Google's guidelines. Your name should reflect your business's real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers.

Common reasons Google Business Profile verification fails

Google tells you when a video was not accepted with a Review issues notice, and lists what was missing. If the Get verified button comes back on your profile, Google could not fully verify the business and you need to try again, with a different method if one is offered. These are the causes Google's help pages point to.

  • The business name is not visible on a permanent sign, or the name on the sign does not match the profile name.
  • The video shows the storefront but no street sign, building number or neighbouring business, so the location cannot be matched.
  • There is no proof of management: nothing only an employee could open or access.
  • The video was edited, paused, stitched together or pre-recorded. Google requires one continuous live recording.
  • The business is not eligible: it is online-only, uses a P.O. box, or uses a virtual office address.
  • A profile already exists for the business. A duplicate is hidden, and a profile someone else verified needs an ownership request instead.
  • The phone number on the profile goes through a phone menu. Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems won’t get the code.
  • Details changed during postcard verification. Editing the business name, address, or category makes the mailed code stop working, and asking for another postcard means we invalidate the code in the mail and send a new one.
  • The postcard code was entered too late. Codes expire after 30 days.

What to do when verification fails

When a video is not accepted, Google lets you record a new one, and it shares the reasons the first video failed. Start with that notice.

  1. Read the Review issues notice

Open the profile on your phone and select Review issues. Google lists what the video lacked, for example business name not visible on storefront or no nearby area shown.

  2. Record a complete new video

The new video must include everything from the first one plus the missing parts. Film it in one take, following the same plan.

  3. Check the profile details

Make sure the name matches your sign, the address is a real place where you meet customers, and the category describes the core business. Fix these before you resubmit, not during a review.

  4. Try another method

If the profile offers more than one method, try a different one. Google asks you to try the available methods before you contact support.

  5. Resolve ownership conflicts

If someone else verified the profile, request ownership. The current owner has 3 days to respond, and if they do not, you may be offered the option to claim the profile.

After your profile is verified

Google sends a confirmation email when the business is verified. After that, you can add owners and managers so staff or an outside helper can work on the profile, and you can transfer primary ownership if the business changes hands.

Changes to business info can trigger a new check. Google may ask for more details or ask you to verify again, using the same steps shown in the profile. Make those changes only when they reflect a real change in the business.
