Quick answer
Performance Max (PMax) is a Google Ads campaign type that runs on all Google Ads inventory, including YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps, from one campaign. For an online store you link a Merchant Center product feed, add text, images and video in asset groups, set an average daily budget, and let Google's bidding find buyers. You control it with brand exclusions, negative keywords, search themes and the channel performance report.

What Performance Max is
Performance Max is a goal-based Google Ads campaign. One campaign reaches all Google Ads inventory, including YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps, from one campaign. You do not pick keywords or placements. You give Google a goal, a budget, your creative assets and, for a store, a product feed, and Google decides where each ad shows and how much to bid.
Google lets you create a Performance Max campaign when the campaign objective is Sales, Leads, Website traffic, or Local store visits and promotions. A small online store almost always picks Sales, because that lets the campaign optimize for purchases recorded by conversion tracking.
PMax campaigns (often shortened to pmax) sit next to any Search campaigns you already run. Google says Search campaigns with an exact match keyword are prioritized over Performance Max when a search matches that keyword. Search themes in PMax get the same priority as phrase and broad match keywords. So an exact match keyword in a Search campaign keeps that search, and PMax takes the rest.
Step one for Performance Max for ecommerce: the Merchant Center feed
Shopping ads inside PMax come from your product data, not from keywords. That data lives in Google Merchant Center, which is a free tool.
Create a Merchant Center account
Sign in with a Google Account and enter your business details. Google asks where you sell: online, in a physical store, or both.
Get your products in
For getting products in, Google can add product information from your online store at sign-up, or you can upload product data manually. On Shopify, linking Shopify automatically syncs your Shopify products into Merchant Center. Other store builders have their own Google apps or feed exports.
Fill every required attribute
Open Google's product data specification and fill in every attribute it marks as required for your type of product. If a required attribute is missing, the product won't be able to serve in ads and free listings. Titles can be 150 characters max.
Fix disapprovals before you spend
Open the products list in Merchant Center and fix any item with issues before you start the campaign. In Google Ads, the channel performance report later flags feed problems such as products that aren't approved in Merchant Center, a suspended Merchant Center account and products missing GTIN.
Link Merchant Center to Google Ads
In Merchant Center, go to Access and services, under Settings to link your Google Ads account. Google's help page says that after linking, you can create a campaign that uses your product information.
Asset groups: what to upload
An asset group is a collection of creatives centered on a theme or related to a target audience. Google combines the pieces into ads for each channel. For a store, Google recommends grouping by the sections or categories of the products on your website. A candle shop might run one asset group for candles and one for gift sets, each with its own images and its own listing group.
Listing groups group your listings by the attributes assigned to them in Merchant Center, such as category, brand, product type or custom labels. Use them to keep each asset group showing the products its images and text describe.
Google says to wait about 2-3 weeks before you judge assets, then replace the weakest ones.
Google can build a video from your images, but it still recommends that you upload at least one video yourself. A short phone clip of the product in use works, as long as it runs 10-60 seconds. Keep text and products in the center 80% of the image, which Google calls the safe area.
Budget and bidding for pmax campaigns
Performance Max has no startup costs. You pay for the ads that run, and the billing follows the channel: on Search, Shopping and Display ads are billed on clicks, and YouTube in-stream ads are billed on CPM (cost per thousand impressions).
You set an average daily budget. Google can spend more on busy days and less on quiet ones, but spend on one day stays under 2 times your average daily budget, and the charge for a billing period stays under 30.4 times your average daily budget. Example: with a $20 average daily budget, plan for a month of about thirty times that, and expect some single days above $20.
For bidding, choose Maximize conversions when you want as many orders as the budget allows, with an optional target CPA, available with Maximize conversions. Choose Maximize conversion value when order values differ a lot and you track revenue, with an optional target ROAS, available with Maximize conversion value. You can start without a target and add one after the store has some order history.
Every new campaign goes through a learning period while Google AI optimizes from your inputs. Frequent changes to budget, targets or goals during that time make the results harder to read, so change one thing at a time.
Brand exclusions, negative keywords and search themes
Brand exclusions let you avoid paying for clicks from people who are already navigating to your site. They block ads on searches for your brand name, common misspellings and related subsidiary brands, and in Performance Max they apply to both Search and Shopping ads. Google describes them as a more comprehensive solution than negative keywords for brand searches.
Negative keywords in PMax work on Search and Shopping inventory only. Google advises using them only for essential brand safety needs or to block completely irrelevant terms. For a store, that means terms like free, used, repair or jobs when you sell none of those.
Search themes go the other way: they suggest searches PMax should reach. You can add up to 50 search themes. Add what your site does not already say. A shop selling soy candles might add wedding favors if it sells bulk orders that its pages barely mention.
Final URL expansion is another setting to check. When it is on, Google may replace your Final URL with a more relevant landing page. Turn it off if you want every ad to land on the page you chose, such as a product or category page.
Reading Performance Max reports
The channel performance report shows how the campaign spent and converted on each channel. Find it under Campaigns, then Insights and reports, then Channel performance. Its status column also flags feed problems, including products that aren't approved in Merchant Center, a suspended Merchant Center account and products missing GTIN.
The asset group report compares asset groups. Google notes that asset groups with higher CPA or lower ROAS still contribute to campaign goals, and Google does not recommend removing asset groups on that basis. Placement reports are meant for brand safety, not performance evaluation.
Judge the campaign on its total: orders and revenue against spend over a few weeks, checked against your own store's sales report. If the two disagree, check conversion tracking before you change the campaign.
- Weekly: check the Merchant Center products list for new disapprovals.
- Weekly: read the channel performance report and its status column.
- Every few weeks: replace the asset with the weakest rating in each asset group.
- Monthly: review search terms and add brand exclusions or negative keywords where needed.
When a small store should use Performance Max shopping campaigns
PMax fits a store that has conversion tracking working, a clean product feed and enough budget for the campaign to see a steady flow of purchases. It also suits a store that has images and at least a basic video, because those assets fill the Display, YouTube and Discover placements.
It fits less well when you need tight control over exactly which searches you pay for, or when you sell very few products with little search demand. In that case a Search campaign with exact and phrase match keywords gives you more say over each click, and you can add PMax later.

Describe what you makeQuestions about Performance Max
What is PMax in Google Ads?
PMax is short for Performance Max, a Google Ads campaign type that runs on all Google Ads inventory, including YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps, from one campaign. You give it a goal, a budget, creative assets and, for a store, a Merchant Center feed. Google then chooses placements and bids for each auction.
Do pmax campaigns need a Merchant Center feed?
PMax campaigns for an online store should use a Merchant Center feed, because product ads with prices and photos come from that data. Google's help says that after linking, you can create a campaign that uses your product information. Listing groups then group your listings by the attributes assigned to them in Merchant Center and decide which products each asset group can show.
How much does Performance Max cost?
Performance Max has no startup costs; you pay for the ads that run. Search, Shopping and Display ads are billed on clicks. Daily spend can reach 2 times your average daily budget, and a billing period stays under 30.4 times your average daily budget.
How do I stop Performance Max showing ads on my own brand name?
To stop Performance Max showing ads on your brand name, add a brand exclusion. It blocks searches for your brand name, common misspellings and related subsidiary brands, and in Performance Max it applies to both Search and Shopping ads. Google describes brand exclusions as a more comprehensive solution than negative keywords.
How many headlines and images does a Performance Max asset group take?
A Performance Max asset group takes 3 to 15 headlines, 30 characters max each, 1 to 5 long headlines, 90 characters max each and 2 to 5 descriptions, 90 characters max each. It can hold up to 20 images, including landscape and square images, plus a square logo and video.
Will Performance Max take traffic from my Search campaigns?
Performance Max can overlap with Search campaigns, but exact match keywords win. Google says Search campaigns with an exact match keyword are prioritized over Performance Max when a search matches that keyword. Search themes carry the same priority as phrase and broad match keywords, so broad and phrase keywords compete with them on relevance.
