Shopify pricing: every plan, every fee and what Shopify takes per sale

By Nation 10 min read

Quick answer

Shopify pricing for an online store starts at $39 a month for the Basic plan, or $29 a month billed yearly, and rises to $105 a month for Grow, $399 a month for Advanced and from $2,300 a month for Plus. On top of the plan, each online payment by standard card through Shopify Payments costs 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, which is $1.17 on a $30 sale, and there is no transaction fee with Shopify Payments. New stores get 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months.

How much does Shopify cost?

Shopify pricing has two parts: a plan you pay for every month, and a fee on each payment you take. The plan fee is the same whether you sell nothing or sell every day. The payment fee depends on the plan, the type of card and the payment provider.

Of the plans a new US store can choose for a public online store, Basic is the lowest priced at $39 a month, or $29 a month when billed yearly. Grow costs $105 a month, Advanced costs $399 a month, and Plus costs from $2,300 a month.

Every plan includes unlimited products and a free myshopify.com address, and hosting is included, so no separate hosting is needed. There are no setup fees on any plan.

Yearly prices are shown per month, and the full year is charged upfront. Card rates are for Shopify Payments, Shopify's own payment provider. The third-party row is an extra fee Shopify charges when you use a different provider.

Is Shopify free? The free trial and the Agentic plan

Shopify has a free trial and one plan with no monthly fee, but a store that sells on its own website needs a paid plan. New stores start with a free 3-day trial with no credit card required. After that, Shopify charges $1 a month for the first 3 months on most plans, then standard monthly pricing. Shopify says trial length and pricing can change and can vary by store location.

If the trial ends before you pick a plan, the store is paused until you choose a paid plan. Note that the free trial cannot be extended, so it is worth having products and payments ready before you start it. Paid apps added during the trial are not free either: app charges are billed on your first invoice after the trial ends.

The Agentic plan costs $0 a month. It is for selling in AI channels, and you pay card fees from 2.9% + 30¢ online only when someone buys. It does not give you a public store of your own: publishing a Shopify online store needs a paid plan.

What happened to the Shopify Starter plan

The Starter plan was meant for selling through social media and messaging apps with a simplified online store. It is not available to new stores.

Stores already on Starter can keep it, with limits: only the Spotlight theme, and no staff accounts; Grow or higher is needed to add them. Also, a store that changes from the Starter plan cannot go back to it. For a new store, the lowest-priced plan with a full online store is Basic at $39 a month.

Shopify Payments fees: what percentage Shopify takes

On every card sale through Shopify Payments, Shopify takes a card processing fee. There is no transaction fee with Shopify Payments on a card order, so you pay only the card rate. On Basic that is 2.9% + 30¢ for a standard card paid online.

Premium, international and in-person cards and PayPal Wallet have their own rates, shown in the table above. A customer paying in another currency adds a 1.5% conversion fee for a US store.

If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic, and the other provider charges its own card rates separately. The fee falls to 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.

The third-party fee is also charged on the store credit or gift card part of an order, for stores created on or after May 12, 2025. This applies even when the store uses Shopify Payments, except on Plus, where the fee is waived when Shopify Payments is the only payment provider. Keep refunds in mind too: card fees are not returned when you refund an order.

How much it costs to sell one $30 item on Shopify

Example: one $30 order on the Basic plan, paid online with a standard US card through Shopify Payments, with free shipping and no sales tax.

  1. Take the card fee

Shopify Payments charges 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic. On a $30 order that is $1.17.

  2. Check for a transaction fee

There is no transaction fee with Shopify Payments. With another payment provider, Shopify would add 2% of the order on top of that provider's own rate.

  3. Adjust for the card

A premium card costs 3.5% + 30¢ instead, and an international card is charged the card rate + 1%, so the same order costs more.

  4. Add the plan fee

The Basic plan costs $39 a month, billed every 30 days, whether or not you sell. Divide it by the number of orders in a month to see what it adds to each one.

  5. Add apps and a theme

Paid apps and a paid theme cost extra. Paid themes are a one-time payment with a lifetime license, and app subscription charges are included in your regular Shopify bill.

What changes by plan: the fee on one $30 sale

Higher plans cost more each month and charge a lower card rate. The chart shows the card fee on the same $30 online sale on each plan, with the plan's monthly price next to it.

Card fee on one $30 online sale, by Shopify plan Shopify Payments, standard US card, paid online. Plan prices are on monthly billing.
  1. Plus $0.98 plus from $2,300 a month Card 2.25% + 30¢ $0.98
  2. Advanced $1.05 plus $399 a month Card 2.5% + 30¢ $1.05
  3. Grow $1.11 plus $105 a month Card 2.7% + 30¢ $1.11
  4. Basic baseline $1.17 plus $39 a month Card 2.9% + 30¢ $1.17

Assumes a $30 order, a standard US card paid online through Shopify Payments, free shipping, no tax and no currency conversion. Plus pricing is the starting price Shopify lists.

When a bigger Shopify plan pays for itself

A lower card rate saves money only when you sell enough to cover the higher plan price. Shopify publishes its own estimates for US stores. It estimates that Grow saves money from about $200,000 a year in sales with Shopify Payments, or $60,000 a year without it. For Advanced, the estimate is about $1,320,000 a year in sales with Shopify Payments, or $528,000 a year without it. These estimates are based on the difference in card rates between plans, and your actual break-even point may vary.

The point comes sooner without Shopify Payments because the third-party fee drops faster than the card rate: 2% on Basic against 1% on Grow.

Plans also differ in features, such as the number of staff accounts in the table above. If your sales are below Shopify's estimates, a bigger plan is worth it only for features you need.

Plan fees are generally non-refundable, so check the plan and the billing period before you pay for a year upfront.

How to keep your Shopify monthly cost down

Most of what you pay is the plan and the card fee, so these are the parts worth managing.

  • Pay yearly once you are sure you will stay. Basic drops from $39 a month to $29 a month, though the full year is charged upfront.
  • Use Shopify Payments to avoid the 2% third-party fee on Basic.
  • Start with a free theme, and try a paid one before you buy it: theme purchases are final sale, with no refund from the theme developer. Install only the apps you use, and check each app's price before you add it.
  • If you need a break from selling, the Pause and Build plan costs $9 a month instead of your full plan. While paused, apps with recurring charges stay active, and reopening needs a new plan, as the old plan is no longer valid.
  • Unless you need a feature from a bigger plan, stay on Basic until your sales reach Shopify's own upgrade estimates.

Questions about Shopify pricing

How much is Shopify a month?

Shopify's Basic plan costs $39 a month on monthly billing, or $29 a month billed yearly. Grow costs $105 a month, Advanced $399 a month and Plus from $2,300 a month. On top of the plan, each online card payment costs 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, and paid apps or a paid theme add to the total cost.

Is Shopify free?

Shopify is not free for a store that sells on its own website. New stores get 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months, and then pay the normal plan price. The Agentic plan costs $0 a month for selling in AI channels, but publishing a Shopify online store needs a paid plan.

How long is the Shopify free trial?

The Shopify free trial gives new stores 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months. Shopify says trial length and pricing can change and can vary by store location. If the trial ends before you choose a plan, the store is paused until you choose a paid plan, and the free trial cannot be extended.

What percentage does Shopify take?

Shopify takes 2.9% + 30¢ of each online card payment on the Basic plan with Shopify Payments, and there is no transaction fee with Shopify Payments. Higher plans charge less: 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. With another payment provider, Shopify adds 2% on Basic on top of that provider's rates.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees?

Shopify charges transaction fees when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. With Shopify Payments, the fee is still charged on the store credit or gift card part of an order, for stores created on or after May 12, 2025. On Plus, it is waived when Shopify Payments is the only payment provider.

Can I still get the Shopify Starter plan?

The Shopify Starter plan is not available to new stores. It was meant for selling through social media and messaging apps with a simplified online store. Stores already on Starter can keep it, but a store that changes from the Starter plan cannot go back to it. For a new store, the lowest-priced plan with a full online store is Basic at $39 a month.

How much does it cost to sell on Shopify?

Selling on Shopify costs the plan fee plus a fee on each payment. Example: a $30 order paid online by standard US card on Basic costs $1.17 in card fees, with no transaction fee through Shopify Payments. The Basic plan adds $39 a month, billed every 30 days whether or not you sell.
