Quick answer
Etsy SEO means writing your listings so Etsy search matches them to what shoppers type and then ranks them well. Your tags, titles, listing descriptions, categories, and attributes decide which searches a listing can appear in, while your shop, customer service, and listing quality help decide its position. New listings also get a small, temporary boost in search results, and US listings with domestic shipping under $6 are prioritized.

What Etsy SEO is and how Etsy search works
Etsy SEO is the work of helping Etsy's own search engine show your listings to the shoppers who want them. It happens inside Etsy, and it follows the rules Etsy publishes in its Seller Handbook and Help Center. Etsy splits search into two phases: query matching and ranking.
In query matching, Etsy looks for listings whose tags, titles, listing descriptions, categories, and attributes match the words a shopper typed. Only listings that match have the potential to appear for that search, however good their photos are. This is why the words you choose come first.
In ranking, Etsy orders the listings that matched. Its Seller Handbook says search takes a holistic view of each listing, including its title, tags, attributes, descriptions, first photo, reviews, and more, and that it takes into account your shop, customer service, and listing quality.
Results are personal as well. Etsy says what you see isn’t always what another buyer might be seeing. Searching for your own listing from your own account is a poor test of how it ranks, and Etsy points sellers to Stats for that instead.
The ranking factors Etsy names
Etsy does not publish a formula, but it does say which kinds of signal it uses. The table groups them as Etsy describes them and puts the action a maker can take next to each one.
Free shipping counts toward the shipping rule: Etsy prioritizes eligible listings under the line, including those with free shipping. There is one exception for shops that use a free shipping guarantee. Listings $35 or more with a free shipping guarantee will be excluded from this change, because they ship free automatically.
The recency boost is small by design. Etsy says renewing your items or creating new listings just to get this small boost isn’t an effective search optimisation strategy, and recommends focusing your time and efforts on improving your tags or working to help increase your conversion rate.
Etsy titles: length, word order and examples
Etsy allows a listing title of up to 140 characters long, but its Help Center suggests using less than 15 words when you describe the traits that make the item special. The advice is to clearly state what the item is and any key details.
Lead with the keywords that best describe what your item is, because that is what shoppers see first, especially on a phone. Etsy also says where a phrase sits in the title doesn’t affect a listing’s ranking, so there is no ranking reason to pack keywords into the first few words. Put the plain name of the item first for the shopper's sake.
Leave out repetition as well as subjective words (for example, “perfect”). Etsy warns that long keyword lists in titles may confuse buyers or turn them off your listings. Extra phrases belong in tags and attributes, where they count for search without making the title hard to read.
Etsy's newer title guidance asks for the top three most critical descriptors for the category (colour, material, and size). Each rewritten title says what the item is first, then the details a buyer would filter on: scent, material, style or how it is made. Words like gift, birthday or for her can still reach search through your tags.
Etsy keywords: tags, categories and attributes
Etsy keywords are the words and phrases shoppers type into search. Start with how a buyer would describe the item, not the name you use in your workshop. For a shop that already has traffic, Etsy Stats shows what search terms people used to find your listings, which is the most direct list of keywords you can get.
- Tags: use all 13 tags and keep each one to 20 characters or less. Etsy says multi-word phrases are better than individual descriptive words.
- No repeats: you don’t need to add tags that repeat the phrases that appear in your categories and attributes. Use the space for phrases that are not already covered.
- Categories: pick the most specific subcategory. Categories act like tags, and your items are included in all the categories that subcategory is nested within.
- Attributes: Etsy says each attribute you add acts like a tag. Etsy advises adding all the relevant options, even if they’re less precise.
- Description: Etsy search considers keywords and phrases within your listing descriptions when ranking listings. Open with a sentence that says what the item is in the words a shopper would use.
Etsy shop optimization beyond the listing
Some of what Etsy search weighs belongs to the shop, not the listing. Etsy includes a shop’s average review rating, message response rate, and case rate from the past three months, so slow replies and open cases can hold back every listing in the shop.
Shop Manager has a Search Visibility page that checks listings and the shop against Etsy's recommendations. It notes that active listings need to meet certain requirements for a chance to receive priority placement in relevant search results. Among the checks: the primary photo should be a singular image of a finished product (no collaged or stitched together images), and it should be clear and well-lit. Etsy recommends a width and height of 2000 pixels or more for the primary photo, and says your shop should have a logo, which helps the buyer understand who you are.
Your shop title is the short line that appears right under your shop name on your shop homepage. It can be up to 55 characters long, and Etsy's Help Center calls it one aspect of your shop that you can use to influence Search Engine Optimization (SEO). When you edit it, you can preview how it will look in Google search results. Say plainly what the shop sells, in the words a buyer would use.
Etsy listing optimization checklist
Work through these in order for each listing. The first five set which searches the listing can match; the rest affect how it ranks.
Pick the most specific category
Choose the deepest subcategory that fits. Categories act like tags, and the listing is included in every category above it.
Write a short, plain title
Say what the item is, then its key details, in less than 15 words. Leave out repetition as well as subjective words (for example, “perfect”).
Fill in every relevant attribute
Colour, material, occasion, style and the rest. Etsy says each attribute you add acts like a tag, so add all the relevant options, even if they’re less precise.
Use every tag
Use all 13 tags, as multi-word phrases of 20 characters or less, without repeating your categories and attributes.
Open the description with keywords
The first lines should say what the item is, what it is made of and who it is for, in the words buyers search with.
Check the primary photo
Make the primary photo a singular image of a finished product (no collaged or stitched together images). It should be clear and well-lit, with a width and height of 2000 pixels or more. Add more photos after it.
Set shipping and a return policy
Keep US domestic shipping under $6 or offer free shipping, and set a return policy.
Publish and wait before judging
A new listing can take up to 48 hours to appear in search results and categories, so give it a few days before you judge it in Stats.
Using AI and ChatGPT for Etsy listings
AI tools such as ChatGPT can draft Etsy titles, tag lists and descriptions quickly. They work best when you give them the facts: what the item is, its materials, size, colours, how you make it and who buys it. Ask for a title that leads with the item, and a set of tags of 20 characters or less each.
Etsy has its own option too. Its Seller Handbook describes an optional AI-powered tool that suggests updated listing titles, for listings written in English. Its suggestions are optional: you can edit them, dismiss them or write your own title.
Check every draft before you publish it. AI tools often write the things Etsy asks sellers to leave out, such as subjective words, long keyword lists and repeated phrases. They can also invent details, like a material you do not use, which makes the listing inaccurate.
Etsy's seller policy has a rule for items themselves: if an item is created through the use of artificial intelligence, you must disclose this in your relevant listings. The same policy asks for your own photographs or video, not stock photos, artistic renderings, or photos used by other sellers or sites. Using AI to help write the words of a listing is a separate question from selling AI-made items, so read Etsy's seller policy and Creativity Standards if you sell AI-made items.
How to improve Etsy SEO over time
Etsy SEO is a cycle of changing a listing, waiting and reading the result. Etsy suggests you track which keywords are generating the most traffic to your listings, and be sure to replace keywords that aren’t generating traffic with new ones. Give each change time to show before you judge it, because traffic for a single listing moves around from week to week.
Change one or two things at a time, such as the first words of a title or a handful of tags, so you can tell what made the difference. Keep a short note of what you changed and when.

Describe what you makeQuestions about Etsy SEO
What is Etsy SEO?
Etsy SEO is the work of helping Etsy search show your listings to the right shoppers. Etsy first matches listings to a search using your tags, titles, listing descriptions, categories, and attributes, then ranks the matches using signals such as listing quality, customer service and shipping price. Most of it is choosing the words buyers use.
How long should an Etsy title be?
An Etsy title can be up to 140 characters long, but Etsy suggests less than 15 words. Lead with what the item is, then its key details, and leave out repetition as well as subjective words (for example, “perfect”). Etsy says where a phrase sits in the title does not change ranking, so write for the shopper reading it.
How many tags should an Etsy listing have?
An Etsy listing should use all 13 tags, according to Etsy's Seller Handbook. Each tag can be 20 characters or less, and multi-word phrases work better than single words. You do not need tags that repeat your categories or attributes, because Etsy already counts those like tags.
Can I use ChatGPT to write Etsy listings?
You can use ChatGPT or another AI tool to draft Etsy titles, tags and descriptions, then check and edit every draft yourself. Remove keyword lists, subjective words and any detail that is not true of the item. Separately, Etsy's seller policy says that if an item is created through the use of artificial intelligence, you must disclose this in your relevant listings.
Does renewing listings help Etsy SEO?
Renewing listings gives only a short lift in Etsy search. Compared with a new listing, Etsy says a renewed listing gets a similar, though smaller, boost, lasting anywhere from a few hours to a few days, and Etsy says renewing just for that boost is not an effective strategy. Etsy recommends working on tags and conversion instead. Each automatic renewal is charged the listing fee of $0.20.
