How does Whatnot work? Selling live, listing and getting paid

By Nation 11 min read

Quick answer

Whatnot is a marketplace where approved sellers sell in shows, each one a live stream where you can sell items, and can also sell fixed-price items from a shop on their profile without going live. It is free to start selling; when an item sells, Whatnot takes a 8% commission on the item price and a 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction processing fee. On a $30 sale those two fees come to $3.57.

Nation, an AI store builder, publishes this page. It is pre-launch, with a waitlist on withnation.ai, so it is not in the fee comparison. See where Nation fits.

How Whatnot works for sellers

Whatnot is built around shows. Whatnot describes a show as a live stream where you can sell items, connect with your audience and talk to buyers in real time. You hold each item up to the camera, viewers bid or buy in the app, and the winning buyer is charged. Auctions are the most common way to sell items during live shows, and many last 30 seconds or less.

Shows are only one of two places to sell. Every seller also has a Profile Shop, a storefront where buyers can browse and purchase eligible Buy It Now listings anytime. Whatnot calls these Marketplace listings. They stay up between shows, so you can sell without going live.

Selling is not open to every account straight away. You apply, Whatnot reviews the application, and you get seller access. After a sale, you print a prepaid Whatnot label, ship the order, and your earnings become available after the carrier confirms delivery.

Whatnot is free to start selling. Fees start when something sells: a 8% commission on Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), which is the sale price of the item, and a 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction payment processing fee on the total order value paid by the buyer, including the item price, buyer-paid shipping, and taxes.

Who can become a Whatnot seller

Whatnot reviews every seller application before it grants access. The table lists the basic rules from Whatnot's seller help center. Many sellers unlock seller access within minutes, and Whatnot emails the rest when it needs more information.

Whatnot seller requirements
RequirementWhatnot's rule
AgeYou must be at least 13 years old. For teen sellers, the account must be owned and registered by a parent or legal guardian aged 18 years or older
LocationWhatnot supports selling in select countries. They include the United States, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
VerificationBefore going live, sellers verify their phone number, payment method, and government-issued ID
Gated categoriesSome categories, such as Luxury Bags & Accessories and Wholesale, need extra approval after you get seller access
If you are declinedYou can usually reapply after 30 days

Applications are declined most often for missing information: no links to other shops, photos that do not show enough stock, or a short answer about why you want to sell. Whatnot asks applicants to give evidence of your selling experience, inventory, and motivation to join Whatnot.

How to sell on Whatnot: applying as a seller

The seller application is filled in from the Whatnot app and only takes a few minutes.

  1. Create an account and start the application

Sign up for a Whatnot account, then tap + Sell on the home screen in the app.

  2. Agree to the Community Guidelines

Next, you review and agree to our Community Guidelines, which set the rules for shows, listings and chat.

  3. Choose your main category

Pick the category you will sell in most and match it to your stock. When you schedule shows later, Shows only appear in the selected category.

  4. Describe your selling experience

Say whether you are new or already sell elsewhere. Whatnot asks for evidence of your selling experience, inventory, and motivation to join Whatnot, so add links to other shops and photos or video of your stock.

  5. Enter your legal name and return address

Enter your full legal name exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID, and the address you will ship from. Whatnot uses the address to calculate how much the buyer pays in shipping costs.

  6. Submit and wait for the decision

Many sellers unlock seller access within minutes. If the application needs another look, Whatnot sends the next steps by email.

How to sell on Whatnot for beginners: your first live show

As a new seller, you get full Seller Hub access after you complete your first show checklist and go live. Your first show is the step that opens the rest of the seller tools, so plan it before anything else.

  1. Schedule the show

In Seller Hub, choose Schedule a Show, then enter a name, date and time, a category and the main selling format. Pick the category with care: Shows only appear in the selected category.

  2. Add listings to the show

Create the items you plan to sell, with a shipping profile that matches each item's packed weight. A Quality Listing has photos and a description and remains available after your show ends. A Temporary Listing is quicker to make and expires when the show ends.

  3. Set up and practise

Prepare your camera, lighting and a way to print labels. You don’t need to show your face when you go live; many sellers film only the items. Rehearsal Mode runs a simulated show with practice bids and no real audience, though new sellers may see it only after their first show.

  4. Complete seller verification

Before you go live, Whatnot asks you to verify your phone number, payment method, and government-issued ID.

  5. Go live and run auctions

Start the show from Seller Hub, put an item on camera and start an auction with a starting bid and a timer. When fewer than 10 seconds remain, each new bid resets the timer, unless you choose Sudden Death. During a show you can run auctions, sell fixed-price listings, and offer Giveaways.

  6. End the show

Closing the app only pauses your show, so end it from the show menu. If you end it by mistake, you can restart it within 2 hours.

How to sell on Whatnot without going live

You can sell on Whatnot without going live through Buy It Now listings in your Profile Shop. Buyers can browse and purchase eligible Buy It Now listings anytime, even when you are offline. A Buy It Now listing has a fixed price and stays up until it sells or you take it down.

You can turn on offers for any Buy It Now listing. When a buyer sends one, you can accept, counter with a different price, or decline. If you already sell elsewhere, you can upload listings in bulk with the Shopify integration or by importing a CSV file.

Two limits matter for sellers who never want to stream. As a new seller, you get full Seller Hub access after you complete your first show checklist and go live, so you may need one show before every tool is open. And Early Payout, which releases earnings sooner, requires hosting the required number of lifetime shows, so a shop with no shows waits for delivery before each sale is paid.

What Whatnot takes from a sale, compared

The same $30 sale on Whatnot and on three other resale marketplaces, using each platform's own published rates. Whatnot's commission falls as your sales grow; the example uses its standard tier.

Fees on one $30 sale, US seller Commission and payment processing on the item price. None of the four has a monthly plan.
  1. Depop $1.44 no monthly plan Processing 3.3% + $0.45 $1.44
  2. Whatnot baseline $3.57 no monthly plan Commission 8% $2.40, Processing 2.9% + $0.30 $1.17
  3. eBay $4.48 no monthly plan Final value 13.6% $4.08, Per order $0.40
  4. Poshmark $6 no monthly plan Commission 20% $6

Assumes a $30 item price, no sales tax, no promotions and a standard US card. Shipping is left out; Whatnot charges processing on the total order value paid by the buyer, including the item price, buyer-paid shipping, and taxes, so an order with paid shipping pays a little more. Whatnot uses its standard tier of $0 – $14,999 in sales over the period that resets every 28-days, at the rate for categories such as Fashion and Other. Coins has a lower rate.

How the Whatnot commission drops as you sell more

Whatnot sets your commission rate from your total sales in a four-week period, and the tier resets every 28-days. The standard 8% rate covers $0 – $14,999 in sales, and the rate steps down at higher volumes. For existing sellers, this structure took effect on September 21, 2026.

Rates differ by category. The table shows two US categories from the standard tier to the highest public tier. Payment processing of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction is charged on top at every tier.

Whatnot US commission rates, standard tier to highest tier
CategoryCommission rates as sales grow
Other8.00% 7.00% 6.50% 5.50% 4.00% 4.00%

Shipping Whatnot orders

Whatnot handles postage for you. By default, buyers pay for shipping at checkout, based on the shipping profile and weight you set on each listing. Because of that, you don't need to purchase your own shipping label: you print the prepaid label from the Shipments page in Seller Hub. You must use a Whatnot-generated label unless Whatnot has approved you to bring your own.

When one buyer wins several items, Smart Bundling automatically groups eligible purchases into shipments, so they go out in one package. Check bundles before you print, since you can only bundle orders before generating shipping labels.

  • Ship every order within two business days of the sale, weekends and holidays excluded.
  • At drop-off, scan your packages in the app to confirm shipment and send the buyer a photo.
  • Late orders hurt your average ship time, which appears anywhere buyers are deciding whether to buy from you.
  • If you miss the deadline, buyers may cancel an order or receive a refund, and the refund is billed back to you.

How Whatnot pays sellers

For most sellers, Whatnot holds the earnings from a sale until the order is delivered. Earnings become available after the carrier confirms delivery, minus commission and processing. You then start a payout from Seller Hub, and most payouts arrive within 1–2 business days.

Payouts go to a bank account. Whatnot sends them via Stripe Connect, and PayPal is no longer available as a payout method for new setups.

Sellers who qualify for Early Payout get paid sooner. With it, earnings become available as soon as you generate a shipping label, rather than after delivery. Eligibility depends on your seller rating, your sales and hosting the required number of lifetime shows, and Seller Hub shows the exact targets for your account.

Is Whatnot worth it for a new seller?

Whatnot suits sellers who are comfortable on camera and sell items that collectors bid on, such as trading cards, coins, comics, toys and fashion. Auctions let buyers set the price, and they move fast: many last 30 seconds or less. The standard commission is lower than Poshmark's and eBay's in the example above.

It suits makers of one-off handmade goods less well. Each show takes preparation, stock and time on camera, and an audience takes time to build. The Profile Shop lets you sell without streaming, but the selling tools and faster payouts are built around shows. If you want a shop that runs on its own between sales, a marketplace listing elsewhere or your own store may fit better.

Questions about selling on Whatnot

How does Whatnot work for sellers?

Whatnot works for sellers through shows, each one a live stream where you can sell items, mostly as auctions, and through a Profile Shop of fixed-price listings. Buyers pay in the app, the seller ships with a prepaid Whatnot label, and Whatnot pays out after delivery, minus a 8% commission and a 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction processing fee.

Can you sell on Whatnot without going live?

You can sell on Whatnot without going live by listing Buy It Now items in your Profile Shop, where buyers can browse and purchase eligible Buy It Now listings anytime. You still need an approved seller account. As a new seller, you get full Seller Hub access after you complete your first show checklist and go live, so expect to host one show before every tool is open.

How much does Whatnot take from a sale?

Whatnot takes a 8% commission on Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), which is the sale price of the item at its standard tier, plus a 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction processing fee on the order total. On a $30 sale with no shipping or tax, the two fees come to $3.57. The commission rate falls as your sales grow.

How long does it take to get approved to sell on Whatnot?

Whatnot approval is often fast: many sellers unlock seller access within minutes, and the application itself only takes a few minutes. Some applications need extra review, and Whatnot emails the next steps. If you are declined, you can usually reapply after 30 days, with more evidence of your stock and selling history.

When does Whatnot pay sellers?

Whatnot pays most sellers once the order is delivered: earnings become available after the carrier confirms delivery. You then start a payout, and most payouts arrive within 1–2 business days. Sellers with Early Payout can withdraw earnings as soon as you generate a shipping label, instead of waiting for delivery.

Is Whatnot worth it for beginners?

Whatnot is worth trying for beginners who sell collectible or resale items and are comfortable on camera, because it is free to start selling and fees apply only to sales. It suits handmade makers less well, since live shows take preparation and an audience takes time to build.
